POSITION: Shelter Support Specialist
STATUS: Non-Exempt (Hourly): 32-40 hours/week
PAY: $41,600 annually ($20/hour)
LOCATION: 97900 Shopping Center Ave #31 Brookings OR 97415
REPORTS TO: Housing Programs Manager

Shelter Support Specialist (SSS) is responsible for providing emotional and practical support to individuals who are experiencing trauma as a result of structural barriers (poverty, homelessness, discrimination, lack of access, etc.). They use their own experiences and life skills to help these individuals overcome challenges and build resilience. They are expected to have a strong understanding of the challenges and needs of individuals who are experiencing homelessness, and to be knowledgeable about resources and support systems. The Shelter Support Specialist should have excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills, and be able to provide empathetic and compassionate support to those they serve, while maintaining good boundaries and structure around the support given.

This is not a supervisory position.

Duties & Expectations
  • Outreach and engagement: The Shelter Support Specialist is responsible for reaching out to and engaging with members of the community, building relationships, and establishing trust with individuals and families.
  • Harm Reduction education: The Shelter Support Specialist is expected to provide individuals with information and tools to minimize the negative consequences of risky behaviors, such as substance use, by promoting safer practices and healthier choices.
  • Addressing immediate needs: The Shelter Support Specialist is responsible for supporting a member’s immediate needs, addressing their current concerns, and providing timely assistance to ensure their well-being and comfort.
  • Cultural competence: The Shelter Support Specialist is expected to have a strong understanding of cultural and linguistic differences, and to be able to communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. This can include the use of interpretation services.
  • Data collection and analysis: The Shelter Support Specialist may be responsible for collecting and analyzing data on the health of the community, and for using this information to inform programs and services. This can be on an individual or community level.
  • Personal and professional development: The Shelter Support Specialist is expected to participate in professional development and training opportunities to stay current on best practices and trends in the field, including being informed of changes in laws and regulations that may impact members and the provision of services.
